Dr. Ajirotutu Omotayo is a distinguished consultant clinical psychologist with over 25 years of experience in clinical practice, specializing in a broad range of psychological issues, including workplace challenges, substance addiction, emotional distress, marital difficulties, sexual abuse, traumatic experiences, learning disorders, and other mental health conditions. His holistic approach to individual wellness and self-development has earned him recognition as a passionate advocate for improving mental health and psychological resilience.
As a Youth Corps Member, Dr. Omotayo’s professional journey began in 1996 when he joined the Department of Psychology at the Federal Neuropsychiatric Hospital, Yaba, Lagos. Following his service, he was retained and later promoted through various roles, culminating in his current position as the Head of the Psychology Department. His academic qualifications include a Doctoral degree in Clinical Psychology, an M.Phil. from the University of Ibadan, a Master’s degree from the University of Lagos, and a first degree in Psychology from Enugu State University.
Dr. Omotayo is highly skilled in providing psychological intervention for individuals facing various psychological and emotional challenges. He has served in multiple national capacities, delivering psychological support to victims of national crises, including the 2002 Ikeja Military Cantonment bomb blast, the 1998 ethnic clashes in Idi-Araba, the 2006 fuel explosion in Ipaja, and the 2012 Dana plane crash. He was also a key member of the Lagos State COVID-19 psychosocial response team, providing emotional support, counseling, and psychotherapy for individuals in self-isolation and those receiving treatment for the virus.
A recognized expert and sought-after speaker, Dr. Omotayo has contributed significantly to the field through his publications, which explore the impact of socioeconomic status on marital choices, the management of low self-esteem among disabled children, and the efficacy of various therapeutic interventions for mental health patients. His research and practice are grounded in evidence-based approaches, particularly in Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) and insight-oriented therapy, which he has utilized to successfully treat individuals struggling with depression, anxiety, and other psychological issues.
In addition to his work as a clinical psychologist, Dr. Omotayo is an experienced trainer and consultant, collaborating with organizations in personnel development and psychological rehabilitation. He has been involved in numerous Employee Assistance Programs (EAPs), including current engagements with Freedom Foundation and House of Refuge, First City Monument Bank, and Niger Delta Petroleum Resources Limited, among others.
Dr. Omotayo’s professional affiliations include being a Fellow of the Nigerian Association of Clinical Psychologists, a registered member of the Nigerian Psychological Association, and a member of the Employee Assistance Professional Association. He also serves as the Chairman of the Strategic Planning and Implementation Committee for South-Western States, Nigeria (NACP). He is an active Lagos State Nigerian Association of Clinical Psychologists Advisory Board member.
